I just noticed I had half an inch of water in the spare tire well and quite some moist underneath the cargo carpet on the passenger side of my Jeep WJ `01. There has been a couple of posts earlier on this topic, however I`m still a bit puzzled about this issue.
I wondered where this water might leak from and some suggested it might arise from the lifgate door hinges. However the ceiling would probably be wet in that case, and it isn`t.
Others suggested it could leak through the hole in the chassis where the trailer tow harness runs. But as the harness is on the opposite side from the moist I rule that one out as well.
One explanation could be that the vents behind the rear windows behind the plastic louvers were stuck open causing water to enter. However I wouldn`t think that much water could enter through there, not by rain at least.
An earlier post in this forum suggested I`d water test it, however there is no moist or water to be seen on the surface of the inside trim, windows or carpets, so I guess it would be difficult to find the leakage if it`s seeping down from somewhere I visually can`t see.
The most obvious explanation might be a leakage through the roof rail on the rear passenger side. I might have to uninstall it and fill the screw holes with some sort of rubber sealant. But wouldn`t then the rear pillars be wet and moist as water runs down there from the roof rail screw holes? I removed some plastic trim and couldn`t track any moist down the rear pillars, so maybe the water seeps in from somewhere else via these roof rail screw holes. The pillar in front of the rear pillar maybe?
To re-seal the rear passenger window also might be a good idea, but wouldn’t I see moist on the window from the inside then?
I would be grateful if someone could provide suggestions as I have no idea where to begin. I`m a bit reluctant to remove all the plastic trims and tear away the carpet searching if there is an obvious solution to this problem.
